What is a dielectric liquid?

A dielectric liquid is a non-conductive fluid designed for use near or in direct contact with electrical and electronic components. In immersion cooling, it allows servers, electronic boards, GPUs, or ASICs to be immersed directly so heat can be transferred as close as possible to its source.

Unlike air cooling, which cools the environment around machines, immersion cooling cools components directly. This difference fundamentally changes the thermal architecture of the data center.

Why air cooling is reaching its limits

Air cooling remains widely used, but it becomes increasingly constrained as density rises. AI and HPC infrastructure can concentrate very high thermal loads in a limited footprint. At these levels, ventilation, hot/cold aisles, and CRAC systems become more expensive, noisier, and harder to optimize.

The most common limits include:

  • high energy consumption linked to cooling and air conditioning;
  • permanent fans that generate noise and mechanical wear;
  • hot spots in high-density racks;
  • strong sensitivity to dust and airborne particles;

Immersion cooling as a next-generation architecture

Immersion cooling places equipment inside a tank filled with dielectric liquid. The fluid directly absorbs heat, circulates toward a heat exchanger, and returns cooled to the tank.

This approach enables:

  • more direct heat dissipation;
  • improved temperature stability;
  • lower noise levels;
  • reduced airflow constraints;
  • higher IT density;
  • better readiness for AI, GPU, and HPC workloads.
