What is Direct Liquid Cooling?

Direct Liquid Cooling is a cooling system in which cooling liquids circulate in direct contact with high-temperature components, such as processors (CPUs), graphics cards (GPUs) or even entire motherboards.

Unlike air cooling, the liquid used in DLC has a much higher heat transfer capacity, enabling heat to be dissipated more efficiently and quickly. The fluids used can vary: demineralized water, glycol mixtures or specialized dielectric fluids.

Avantages Clés

  • Open cold plates for CPU and GPU instead of proprietary loops
  • Removes over 80% of server heat
  • Enables sustainable heat reuse
  • Ideal for upgrading existing configurations

The Benefits of Direct Liquid Cooling

Direct Liquid Cooling represents an advanced cooling solution offering significant advantages for companies seeking to optimize their IT performance.

Superior thermal efficiency

Liquid absorbs much more heat than air, drastically reducing air conditioning needs.

Space-saving design

More compact systems allowing maximum component density in restricted spaces.

Silent operation

DLC operates much more quietly than fan-based systems, even under high loads.

Energy savings

Significant reduction in energy costs, particularly interesting for datacenters.

Extended lifespan

Better controlled temperatures reduce thermal stress and extend component lifespan.

Removes over 80% of server heat
Significant energy cost reduction
Silent operation even under load
Increased computing density per rack
Extended component lifespan
Sustainable heat reuse

Types of Direct Liquid Cooling

There are several types of DLC, each adapted to specific needs:

01

Direct contact cooling

Liquid comes into direct contact with the component via cooling blocks installed on the CPU, GPU or other critical parts.

02

Immersion cooling

Components are immersed in a non-conductive dielectric liquid. Ideal for complete servers and high-density systems.

03

Hybrid cooling

Air/liquid combination where some parts use liquid for critical components, others use air for additional dissipation.

DLC Implementation Process

Setting up a Direct Liquid Cooling system requires meticulous planning, careful component selection and precise installation steps.

Coolant Selection
01

Coolant Selection

The choice of liquid is crucial in DLC. Common fluids include:

  • Demineralized water: often used in basic cooling systems, but must be regularly changed to prevent corrosion
  • Glycol mixtures: very common, they better resist temperature variations and offer better protection against corrosion
  • Dielectric liquids: these non-conductive liquids allow complete immersion of components without risk of short circuit
Cooling Component Selection
02

Cooling Component Selection

Cooling components must be adapted to the elements they need to cool:

  • Cooling blocks: used for specific components like CPU or GPU, designed to maximize contact surface and ensure efficient dissipation
  • Pumps and reservoirs: ensure constant liquid circulation, even under heavy thermal loads
  • Radiators: located outside the components, they dissipate liquid heat, evacuating this heat into the surrounding environment
Block and Tube Installation
03

Block and Tube Installation

The installation of cooling blocks must be precise to ensure maximum contact with surfaces to be cooled. Tubes carrying the liquid must be perfectly sealed to prevent any leakage.

Leak Testing
04

Leak Testing

Before starting the system, it is essential to perform a leak test. Leaks can damage electronic components, especially if conductive liquids like demineralized water are used. A pressure test is often performed to detect weak points.

Temperature Control and Maintenance
05

Temperature Control and Maintenance

Once in place, the system requires regular monitoring and maintenance. The liquid must be checked periodically to avoid any deposits or contamination that could reduce cooling efficiency.
